Jan Kristof Schliep studied opera singing at the Hanover University of Music (Germany) with Prof. G. Faulstich. While still a student he performed at the Theater Lübeck in Shostakovich's "The Nose" (directed by J. Peters-Messer) and Offenbach's "La Belle Hélène" (D: A. Pilavachi) and at the Theater of Hildesheim in Kálmán's "Countess Maritza" as Zsupán and Henze's “The Young Lord” as Prof. v. Mucker (D: H.-P. Lehmann).
After studying singing, Jan Kristof Schliep was a permanent member of the ensemble at the TfN · Theater für Niedersachsen Hildesheim for nine years.
Initially primarily engaged as a buffo and Spieltenor, he quickly proved himself in the character fach. His role spectrum – in more than 40
productions in nine years – includes roles such as Monostatos (Mozart, "The Magic Flute" | D: Volker Vogel), wicked witch (Humperdinck: "Hansel and Gretel"), Bob Boles (Britten: "Peter Grimes ”| D: F. v. Laecke) and David (Wagner:“ Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg ”| D: H.-P. Lehmann).
Roles in rarely performed works such as Ullman's "The Broken Jug" (Licht | D: W. Gropper) or Orff's "The Moon" (Narrator | D: J. Reitmeier) and the Traumfresserchen in W. Hiller's opera of the same name (D: A . Heil) can also be found in his repertoire. He was awarded the price of the "Freunde des Theaters für Niedersachsen" for "outstanding artistic achievement".
In autumn 2016 Jan Kristof Schliep ended his permanent engagement at TfN and since then has specialized even more in roles of the Charakter and jugendlicher Heldentenor fach as a freelance singer. This increasing specialization has been accompanied by the opera coach Axel Heil (Hanover) for several years.
In the season 2016/17 he sang in Busoni's "Doktor Faust" (Beeltzebuth | 1st Wittenberg student | D: U. Schwarz) at its former theatre. In the 2019/20 season he was again a guest at TfN as Elcius in the baroque opera "Croesus" by R. Keiser, directed by the Flemish Baroque specialist Sigrid T'Hooft.
In 2019 Jan Kristof Schliep sang Tamino (Mozart: “The Magic Flute” | D: J. Korving) in the premiere of the Dutch translation by Jan Rot and sang several roles in Ch. Meijering's contemporary opera “St. Louis Blues "(D: J. Kriek) with the orkest de ereprijs, one of the most prestigious ensemble for new music in the Netherlands.
Jan Kristof Schliep recently worked in master classes with tenor Prof. Arnold Bezuyen (Graz), repetitor Jendrik Springer (Vienna) and regularly with Christoph Stöcker (Düsseldorf). He is a member of the artists' association ensemble artists e. V. and currently lives in Nijmegen, The Netherlands.
